INDEPENDENT LADIES

Top 5 Wednesday

If you need to know anything about me, it’s that I love my leading ladies and I’m so excited to share my current favourites with you today ☺️

5

Melantha Jhirl from Nightflyers by George R.R. Martin

Melantha is (as GRRM puts it) a “genetically engineered superwoman” and she stands out so much in this expedition short story. She is definitely one of the more central characters but even so, her story arc is amazing. I loved this character and after having read the book, I can’t wait to see the Netflix show.

4

Renna Carrizal from The Star Thief by Jamie Grey

The Star Thief was published in early 2014 and is such an underrated science fiction/romance novel. Renna is such a spunky heroine, and is so entertainingly witty and sarcastic. She really carries with novel with her strength and humour. I also remember this being a really refreshing read for the fact that Renna is super comfortable with her sexuality and there was no shaming other women. A+++

3

Tori Stewart from Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

I read this book nearly a year ago and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. This story centres around several characters and, but Tori is our proxy into the world and we get to know the most about her. Tori is fixed on avenging the death of her sister and this drive to her character makes her so compelling and champion behind.

2

Gilene from Phoenix Unbound by Grace Dravern

Phoenix Unbound is a recent read and the main female character Gilene is a fire witch that makes a huge sacrifice annual to protect the other women of her village. Her actions are always selfless with the interest of others at mind. As of late, she is definitely one of the most courageous characters I have read about in a while!

1

Alita from Alita: Battle Angel [movie]

I know box office wise this movie isn’t performing well and lets be real, it has its obvious faults. Despite this, Alita deserves the top spot on this list! Alita is so precious and is filled with wide eyed wonder. Whilst simultaneously taking down baddies and discovering her potential as a warrior. AND I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!!!

Tbh this has been one of my favourite T5W because I’m such a character driven reader! Here is the goodreads group if you’d like to join in on the discussions.

I tried to go outside the box a little bit (because honestly year round Nina Zenik makes the top of this list) but all these characters are from books/media I have been consuming lately — so they’re super timely.

I’d love to hear from you guys below about some of your favourite heroines right now from books, movies, tv shows or even games! 💃🏻👑

  1. I love this post, Carly – nothing beats a highly capable, independent, fictional lady for when we need a little confidence boost. I actually haven’t read any of the books on you’re list but I’m defiantly heading over to goodreads to check them out. ❤
