WHAT I READ IN APRIL 2020

Monthly TBR and Reading Goals

Hello bookworms! I hope you’re all sleeping okay and having a good week so far. April was a weirdly exhausting month. The lack of routine because of Iso set in and I just began to feel really lethargic. I have no doubt that it affected my reading because I just didn’t have it in me to pick up anything new or high fantasy. Although some reads were enjoyable, I just have come out of April with the impression that it was a really lacklustre month.

Also if we could all just ignore the fact that while most people are posting their May wrap up, I’m only just posting my April — that would be great 😂

THE QUEEN OF NOTHING BY HOLLY BLACK ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Young Adult • Fantasy • Fae • Romance

I started off April strong finishing The Folk of the Air series. This has been one of the best YA Fantasy series I’ve ever read. I loved how vulnerability and ambition have been such a big part of this series. I know that most people wanted this book to go out with more of a bang, but personally I was really satisfied with this finale. It had me on the edge of my seat and I enjoyed how things were wrapped up in this book! Read my full review here.

INTO THE DROWNING DEEP BY MIRA GRANT (REREAD) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Adult • SciFi • Killer Mermaids • Sapphic

After feeling a bit lost, I decided to revisit some old favourite books of mine. Horror/thriller books are hard to reread I’ve come to learn, because a lot of the excitement of this book hinges on what’s going to happen next. Nevertheless the slow burn, characterisation and the romance was still enjoyable a second time around. Overall I just appreciate how well crafted this book is and I’ll never stop talking about it until there’s a sequel! Read my full review here.

FAKING UNDER THE MISTLETOE BY ASHLEY SHEPHERD (REREAD) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
New Adult • Holiday/Office Romance • Contemporary

This romance book was at the top of my favourites list of 2019. It was still just as good the second time. I think I’m obsessed with that cheery girl and moody love interest dynamic.  Read my full review here.

THE BEAST BY KATEE ROBERTS ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Adult • Romance • Erotica • Retelling • MMF

Katee Roberts just keeps delivering amazing steamy romances with her Wicked Villains series. I loved this MMF romance and truthfully it might have been my favourite in the series so far. I always hold back a star with though with these books because smut is kind of the central plot and that isn’t my absolute favourite type of romance story. Neverthelss these are really enjoyable and angsty every time.

EAT, AND LOVE YOURSELF BY SWEENEY BOO ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Graphic Novel • Young Adult • Mental Health • Plus Size MC

I don’t ever request graphic novels from Netgalley, but the cover art drew me in and the fact that it had a plus size MC. I won’t pretend I know what I’m talking about when it comes to graphic novels because I read them so rarely, but this one really made me feel things. I thought the narrative that explored disordered eating, body shaming and body image was done in a subtle manner. The colour scheme and the artwork made this read especially engaging.

WICKED SAINTS BY EMILY A. DUNCAN ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Young Adult • Fantasy • Romance

I’m still conflicted about this book even though it’s been a month since I’ve read it. I’m really unsure if I’m going to continue with the sequel. Part of me wants to because I enjoyed the characterisation of Malachiasz. The other part is still deeply confused about what even happened in this book. I desperately needed more a bit explicit information because I’m not the most intellectual reader. I also wasn’t a fan of Serefin’s chapters, it felt like such a chore reading them. I loved the setting and can see how Skyrim inspired this world, it gave me the best thrills. But unfortunately that isn’t enough of a deciding factor on whether I’l continue with the series or not. 5

GET A LIFE, CHLOE BROWN BY TALIA HIBBERT ⭐️⭐️⭐️
New Adult • Romance • Plus Size MC • Disability Rep • Enemies to Lovers

3 stars by no means infers that this was a bad book, but I expected this to be a 5 star read. I pretty much enjoyed everything this novel was doing, the characterisation of Chloe, the representation, the dynamic between the love interests, as well as the story. The downfall was that I found the narrative frustrating for some reason. It’s like their was an invisible barrier between me and this book, and whilst I appreciated everything that it was doing, I just never felt impassioned about like I want to when I read a romance book.

IT AIN’T ME, BABE BY TILLIE COLE ⭐️⭐️⭐️
New Adult • Dark Romance

Wanting to explore more dark romance, I picked up this book about a young woman escaping a cult and taking shelter amongst a Motorcycle gang/club. This novel is excellently crafted and I never doubted for a second that the author had really done their research to make the reading experience accurate, despite how saddening and disturbing it was. Unfortunately I just don’t buy into romances about characters that are soul bonded very often. Especially in the instance of this book where the love interest was felt generic and lukewarm.

THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US BY TRICIA LEVENSELLER ⭐️⭐️
Young Adult • Fantasy • Romance

My hopes for this book were too high going in. Everything about this book was generic – from the characters, to the world, to the romance. It sounded good in theory but was really lacking in execution. Read my full review here.

And that’s the wrap up! Thank you so much for reading. I’d love to hear what you think of these books if you’ve read any of them!
