Title: False Hearts
Author: Laura Lam
Series or Standalone: Pacifica, #1/Can be read as a Standalone
Genre: Adult, Science Fiction, Mystery
Publication Date: June 16th 2016
Star Rating: ★★★★☆
False Hearts has been on my TBR for years. I even attempted to pick it up a few years ago. I decided I’d keep it on my TBR for the right time. There was always something about this book that intrigued me. Perhaps it was the Orphan Black comparisons, one twin disguising themselves as another to go undercover and infiltrate the biggest crime syndicate in San Francisco. As you can tell from my rating, I really enjoyed this book and happy it stayed on my radar for year before it was finally the right time to read it!
False Hearts follows formerly conjoined sisters Tila and Taema, part Samoan and bisexual sisters, who become entwined in a murderous plot in the underbelly of a futuristic San Francisco. Raised in the closed cult of Mana’s Hearth and denied access to modern technology, the sisters escape to San Francisco when the heart they share begins to fail. At 16, they are surgically separated and given new artificial hearts, and begin to pursue their new lives in San Francisco.
Ten years later, Tila returns one night to the twins home in the city, terrified and covered in blood. When she is indicted for murder, the first homicide by a civilian in decades and possible involvement in a powerful crime syndicate that deals in the flow of Zeal – a drug that allows violent minds to enact their darkest desires in a terrifying dreamscape – Taema is given a proposition: go undercover as her sister and perhaps save her twin’s life. But during her investigation Taema discovers disturbing links between the twins’ past and their present. Once unable to keep anything from each other, the sisters now discover the true cost of secrets.
